You work hard for your money and are probably counting on the return of your security deposit when you move out and in to a new apartment.
We have some tips from experts on how to get back your hard-earned security deposit.
The first step is to document the condition of your apartment when you move in.
While you are living in your apartment you should keep it in good condition, pay attention to small repairs and contact the management office if anything goes wrong during your lease and go back to step one, document it.
Read your lease and understand the rules regarding your community as well as the rules for getting your security deposit back. If you have roommates, make sure that they understand the guidelines as well.
Clean your apartment thoroughly and repair any minor damage to walls, floors, and cabinets. Patch up holes, buff of scratches and use paint or stain on cabinets.
Give plenty of notice and arrange for a move out walk through, oh and go back to step one and document your findings.
Once you have moved out, you should expect your deposit anywhere between 15 to 60 days. If there were any deductions, your landlord or leasing agent must document these items. You have the right to dispute these claims and if yes, you followed step 1 by documenting everything, you should have no problems getting all or most of your security deposit back.
